Two dead in attack against Golden Dawn party offices, Greece in shock.

Ο Κάφκα, ο Χίτλερ και η...Μέρκελ.Greece was shocked on Friday night by an unprecedented attack against the offices of ultra-Right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) party in an Athens northern suburb which left two «party members» dead and another hospitalized in critical condition.

The attack, which came a few weeks after the murder of a Leftist anti-fascist activist, has fuelled worries of mounting political violence in the debt-ridden country.

The two victims, 22 and 27 years old respectively, were killed when two unidentified men on a motorcycle opened fire with automatic weapons in front of the party offices at the Neon Herakleion district, police said………
As the assailants are still at large, and counter-terrorism police squads continue the investigation, political commentators in Greek media suggested that Friday’s attack might have been made in revenge for Pavlos Fyssas’ death on Sept. 18.

Fyssas’ stabbing by a Golden Dawn party supporter at the port of Piraeus triggered a wave of anti-fascist protests and a crackdown on the party for first time in four decades in Greece.

Within a few weeks, police raided party offices nationwide as part of probes into the killing and dozens of previous attacks against Left parties activists and migrants, and Golden Dawn’s leader Nikos Michaloliakos and four MPs were arrested for setting up and running a criminal organization.

As Michaloliakos is still in prison pending trial, in a statement released on Friday night, Golden Dawn accused Greek authorities of «neglect,» claiming that requests for police protection after recent threats against the party were ignored.

Golden Dawn first entered Greece’s parliament in last year’s general elections, winning 7 percent of the vote and 18 seats in the 300-member chamber. The party rode the wave of discontent of Greek peoples against the harsh austerity introduced in 2010 in order to stave off default and overcome the economic crisis.

After Fyssas’ killing, the climate changed and the party suffered losses in recent opinion surveys.

The government and all seven parties represented in parliament strongly condemned Friday’s shooting as another violent act which aims to destabilize democracy.

«The murderers, whoever they are, will face the law and a united Greek society,» Greek government spokesperson Simos Kedikoglou said.

«The law will be enforced. We will not allow the country to be turned into a theater for settling accounts,» Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said.

«Today’s killing creates targets democracy,» main opposition Radical Left SYRIZA party stressed in a press release.

The attack at Golden Dawn’s party offices came as the government pushes a long-awaited anti-racism draft bill which introduces strict penalties for racially-motivated crimes.
