Greek FM Accuses Turkey of Cyprus Negotiations Breakdown. — (Turkey’s actions threaten sovereign rights)

Απειλητικές προειδοποιήσεις Άγκυρας προς διεθνείς εταιρείες για την κυπριακή ΑΟΖGreece has accused Turkey of escalating tensions around Cyprus and undermining negotiations on settlement of the Cyprus issue, the Greek Foreign Ministry said in a Thursday statement.

“Unfortunately, at the center … is Turkey’s refusal to see that the Republic of Cyprus is an independent and sovereign state, a member of the UN and the European Union, that exercises sovereignty and sovereign rights, in accordance with international law.

The exercising of these rights includes the maritime zones (EEZ) provided  by the Law of the Sea; more specifically, the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf,” the statement said………………….EL AN……………………EL ETHNOS

JOURNALIST: Mr. Minister, an agreement on the readmission of illegal immigrants was signed yesterday in Brussels by the EU and Turkey. What does this mean for Greece?

D. KOURKOULAS: It was announced yesterday that, in the coming days, this agreement – which had been pending for a long time – will be signed in Ankara. It is a positive step. Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos visited the Greek Community in Alexandria on Saturday, 23 November.After a tour of the historic Greek quarter and a briefing on Community issues from the Community President, Ioannis Siokas, and Board of Directors, Mr. Gerontopoulos made the following statement: “I was impressed with the work being done here, with the primary school, middle school and high school, the retirement home that provides free relief to our elderly compatriots, as well as the remarkable facilities. Greece welcomes the adoption by the Plenary of the 68th UN General Assembly, on Wednesday, 6 November 2013, of a Resolution on the observance of the Olympic Truce for the period from 7 days before through 7 days after the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, which will take place from 7 to 23 February 2014.

The Draft Resolution was submitted by the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN and received the full support of the Greek Permanent Mission, given that Greece, as the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Idea, is a longstanding supporter of global sports cooperation and the idea of reviving the Olympic Truce……..
